r/FortNiteBR Bricks, commonly referred to by the token symbol BRICK, is a cryptocurrency project originally developed as part of Reddit's Community Points initiative. Launched in May 2020, it was specifically designed for the r/FortNiteBR subreddit, one of the largest online communities dedicated to the game Fortnite. The primary purpose of Bricks was to reward users for their contributions to the community, such as posting high-quality content or engaging in discussions. The distribution of Bricks was based on the amount of karma a user earned within the subreddit. Once distributed, these tokens were stored in a user's Reddit Vault, which is a digital wallet integrated into the Reddit mobile app. Technically, Bricks are ERC-20 tokens. While they initially operated on the Ethereum mainnet, the project eventually migrated to the Arbitrum Nova network, a layer-2 scaling solution, to reduce transaction costs and increase speed. Within the r/FortNiteBR community, Bricks served several utility functions. Users could spend them to purchase a Special Membership, which unlocked exclusive features like loyalty badges, custom emojis, and the ability to post GIFs in comments. They also functioned as a governance tool, allowing holders to vote in community polls where the weight of a vote was determined by the number of tokens held. Additionally, users could tip Bricks to others as a sign of appreciation for their posts. In late 2023, Reddit announced the discontinuation of its Community Points program, citing scalability challenges and an uncertain regulatory environment. As a result, Bricks were officially sunset by the platform on November 8, 2023. Following this change, users can no longer earn Bricks through community participation on Reddit, and the tokens are no longer integrated into the subreddit’s interface. However, because the tokens exist on the blockchain independently of the platform, they can still be held, transferred, or traded on external decentralized and centralized exchanges by individual owners. It is important to note that the Bricks project was never officially affiliated with Epic Games, the developer of Fortnite. Instead, it was a social experiment by Reddit to explore blockchain-based community engagement and ownership.
