Avalanche is a decentralized blockchain platform designed to provide high scalability, security, and interoperability for decentralized applications and enterprise networks. Launched in 2020 by Ava Labs, which was founded by computer scientist Emin Gun Sirer and researchers from Cornell University, the project aims to solve the blockchain trilemma by balancing performance with decentralization. At its core, Avalanche uses a unique consensus mechanism known as the Avalanche consensus protocol. Unlike traditional systems that require every node to agree on every transaction, this protocol uses a process called repeated random sampling. This allows the network to reach a consensus quickly through a lightweight gossip method, resulting in near-instant transaction finality and the ability to process thousands of transactions per second. The network architecture is distinguished by its use of three built-in blockchains, each serving a specific role: The Exchange Chain (X-Chain) is used for creating and trading digital assets, including the native token. The Platform Chain (P-Chain) coordinates the network validators and allows for the creation of new subnets. The Contract Chain (C-Chain) is the primary smart contract platform. It is fully compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, allowing developers to easily migrate or build applications using familiar tools. A key feature of the project is the concept of Subnets, or subnetworks. These are independent sets of validators that manage their own customized blockchains. Subnets allow developers to create networks with specific rules, such as geographical requirements for validators or private data access, without competing for resources on the main network. This modular design helps the ecosystem scale horizontally. The native token of the platform is AVAX. It serves several roles within the ecosystem: it is used to pay for transaction fees, which are subsequently burned to manage supply; it is used for staking to secure the network and earn rewards; and it acts as a basic unit of account between the various subnets. In addition to its technical foundation, the project has introduced tools like Teleporter and the HyperSDK to improve cross-chain communication and performance.
