Crypto investment products experienced five weeks of continuous heavy withdrawals approximating $4 billion in total. Last week they recorded their first net injection of capital in five weeks (~$1 billion) according to CoinShares' total digital asset fund flows (ETF &amp; trust) report released on March 3, 2026. Bitcoin and the overall cryptocurrency market appear to be stabilizing, which has led to a renewed positive sentiment by investors in the form of capital flowing into crypto assets for the first time since January 2026. Since October 2023, $880 million worth of bitcoin (BTC) has been invested in cryptocurrencies through BTC-based funds (the largest amount in many years). Furthermore, total inflows for other cryptocurrencies also show growth as evidenced by ether and solana which amounted to $117 million and $54 million respectively. Overall, there is increased demand for cryptocurrencies due to demand for layer 1 blockchain technology. Cryptocurrencies have shifted from net outflows induced by profit taking and macroeconomic factors to net inflows even though prices had previously dropped dramatically due to past price declines.Breaking Down the $1 Billion Inflow Week<ol><li data-list="bullet">Historical data by CoinShares show that crypto ETPs track inflows into the crypto market by exchanges worldwide. This data is a reliable indicator of retail and institutional-level sentiment towards cryptocurrencies. The most recent report includes:</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">1. Bitcoin (BTC) has a market-topping $882m of the total $1 billion in inflows over last week. This was the first substantial weekly inflow recorded for BTC-based products in almost three months and follows a multi-week trend of BTC product sells.</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">2. Ether (ETH) received a total of $117m in inflows, their strongest weekly data for 2023 so far, as confidence rises around the future of the Ethereum ecosystem due to ongoing network upgrades and increased decentralised finance (DeFi) activity.</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">3. Solana (SOL) is gaining momentum, with $54m of inflows into the Solanaplasm products as more people become interested in using these chains and engaging with projects that have governed themselves through the creation of large communities.</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">Total Crypto ETPs for last week were $1bn. This ended a five-week stretch where $4bn was withdrawn from the Crypto ETP sector.</li></ol> All else being equal small allocations went into other areas than in this period including multi-asset and alternative investments; however bitcoin was still noticeably the dominant asset class. Additionally no significant single outflow was observed in any asset class unlike what was experienced during previous weeks where there had been considerable redemptions.<h2>What Drove the Sentiment Shift?</h2>According to CoinShares’ Head of Research James Butterfill, it is dangerous to attribute the reversal to a single catalyst and, in his analysis, he gave the following explanation: “At the macro level, determining what has led to the change in sentiment cannot be broken down to one catalyst as the easiest explanation for the undulation of sentiments would likely be attributed to the recent weakness in price movement, breaking through key technical thresholds and the changes in the accumulation periods for large bitcoin holders.” In his comment about recent conversations with clients, Butterfill concluded, “At the anecdotal level, most of my recent client conversations have focused on finding points to enter into this asset class rather than reducing exposure to the asset class.”<h3>A few things were likely to have contributed to the inflow surge:</h3>Stabilization of price: Bitcoin had been down from the previous high in late 2025, below certain price points (in the $65k to $68k range), and when it started moving back up, it caused some volt to accumulate on dips; Accumulation by whales: on-chain analysis by companies like Glassnode and CryptoQuant show that large wallets have been increasing their holdings, consistent with what Butterfill mentioned regarding renewed accumulation during the correction; Changing macro environment: traditional markets have gone through much lower volatility, compounded with a lower expectation of inflation, as well as less fear of aggressive rate hikes; Institutional position: stable inflows into Spot Bitcoin ETFs (particularly in the U.S.) during the same time create further evidence of this continuing trend. This is due to an increase in both institutional and high-net-worth interest in Bitcoin. Ether (ETH); $117M Inflow This is the largest one-week influx of Ether since January. Benefits of Ethereum's Staking yield and continuing development of Layer 2 have contributed to this influx, as have recent developments in Eric and Elliott. Solana (SOL); $54M Inflow Solana continues to demonstrate its ability to attract users in a robust environment. Solana provides application developers with higher throughput and lower fees than its competitors such as Ethereum. Similar assets received very small inflows, while other altcoins did not see significant outflows.The convergence of inflows into BTC, ETH &amp; SOL suggests a broader level of confidence than that of just Bitcoin.<h2>Implications for the Crypto Market</h2>There are multiple ramifications of this reversal:Short-term sentiment boost - Positive flows typically result in stabilisation or upward momentum in price due to support from new capital. Institutional re-engagement - Institutions appear to be focused more on entry points than exit points, suggesting an adjustment of where they are positioned following their earlier de-risking. ETF parallel - U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have experienced consistent flows of capital into them recently, indicating trends being seen in ETP’s across the globe are much in line with those being seen in large markets. Risk of reversal - Although we see one week as providing a very positive momentum, we can’t necessarily consider this as indicating future flows will remain strong. Macro shocks, regulatory developments and renewed selling pressure could very quickly alter this trend. Analysts will pay close attention to the upcoming weeks to assess whether the pattern established over the last few weeks will lead to a new recovery phase, and if so how long will it last before reverting back to an up-trending period?<h2>Broader Context in 2026 Crypto Flows</h2>The year 2025 finished well for the crypto industry; however, the start to 2026 was not so positive due to considerable withdrawals throughout January and February as a result of hedge funds profit taking and general uncertainty within the macroeconomic environment. After seeing five straight weeks of mass redemptions (one of the most significant amounts of redemptions we have ever seen, dating back to the 2022/Q4 bear market), last week saw over $1 billion in inflows into cryptocurrency (and significantly impacted by Bitcoin trading over $68,000 with both Ether and Solana continuing to remain reasonably strong versus each other). If we continue to see inflows into crypto, this would help generate further increase in value for the crypto asset class and likely move larger amounts of institutional money into crypto as an investment type.<h2>Conclusion</h2>Last week saw a significant shift in capital flows into cryptocurrency investment products, with total inflows of $1 billion—the first positive flow in five weeks. Bitcoin funds were the main drivers of these inflows, accounting for ~$882 million; Ether at $117 million; and Solana at $54 million. CoinShares believes that these flows are in part due to large holders accumulating more positions, along with clients transitioning to buying instead of selling due to weak pricing conditions. While macroeconomic factors remain unclear, the recent influx of funds into this sector by institutional and accredited investors is indicative of growing confidence in the market. If these inflows can be sustained over time, then they may indicate that the digital asset market is ready for a significantly more constructive phase by 2026. However, there will continue to be substantial volatility and numerous risks associated with investing in cryptocurrencies.
