The Bitcoin protocol has displayed nearly unimaginable robustness since it was established in 2009. It has weathered numerous dramatic reductions in price due to booms and busts, failure of multiple crypto-exchanges, government interference, as well as many extreme technical stress-tests, and yet has always been available on-line. This consistent availability has established Bitcoin as the most reliable, robust, and distributed financial network available today. Nonetheless, even though Bitcoin relies heavily on technology like code and consensus protocols, it is ultimately dependent on an extensive physical ecosystem: submarine fiber optic cables, internet service providers (ISPs) and data centres. The Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance (CCAF) conducts a comprehensive study to better understand how resilient Bitcoin is to disruptions in the physical infrastructure, as well as identify its previously unknown weaknesses.<h2>The Landmark Study: Methodology and Scope</h2>On ArXiv.com, the study “Bitcoin Under Stress: Measuring Infrastructure Resilience 2014-2025” by Wenbin Wu and Alexander Neumueller was published in February 2026 and amended in March 2018. This is one of the most comprehensive analyses of the physical infrastructure of Bitcoin available today. The researchers looked at more than ten years of Bitcoin’s peer-to-peer (P2P) network data from 2014 to 2025, then cross-referenced the dataset with 68 verified submarine cable faults that occurred worldwide. They used cutting-edge modeling techniques in order to test the stress scenarios, including: <ol><li data-list="bullet">Cascade simulations by country</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">Multiplex percolation</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">Monte Carlo simulation</li></ol> A researcher defined a "critical failure threshold" as the point at which at least 10% of bitcoin nodes lose internet access, creating enough disruption to substantially degrade the efficiency and reliability of the bitcoin blockchain. The main focus of their study was submarine communications cables, which transmit about 99% of all internet traffic globally through fiber optics. Other types of connections, such as terrestrial links; redundant routes (or multi-homing); and privacy tools (like TOR) were also included in the analysis.<img src="https://jid.rerrkvifj.com/media/customer/creatorSystem/572f8ff7-b1d8-441c-a759-82a0ad06eb5a.jpeg">A Global Network: Submarine cables connect the world, with specific routes highlighting connectivity across the Atlantic, Africa, and Asia, while Bitcoin nodes are distributed across the globe. <h2>Resilience to Random Cable Failures: Exceptionally High Threshold</h2>The finding of this study that had the most impact was the resilience of the Bitcoin network in regard to having random, large scale failures of an underlying infrastructure. The network showed remarkable strength and resilience in the face of accidental disruptive scenarios (e.g., cable breakages from earthquakes; ship anchors damaging undersea cables; technical failures) by the fact that the simulations found that between 72% and 92% of international undersea cables need to fail at the same time before significant global disconnection from the Bitcoin network would occur. This is further corroborated by the following empirical data;Out of 68 known cable failures, 87% represent disruptions impacting less than 5% of the total Bitcoin nodes that could have reached these cable failures. Node connectivity was impacted by an average of — 1.5% with a median of — 0.4%. Regional outages had very little effect on global performance, with the exception of the regional outage on March 11, 2024, when there was a major outage of 7-8 undersea cables connecting to the coastline of Côte d'Ivoire, which impacted connectivity for parts of 13 countries located in Africa. Although it caused a significant disruption to connectivity on the continent, the global Bitcoin network lost approximately 5-7 nodes, which is only about 0.03% of the total network. Additionally, the data also shows that there is effectively no correlation between the disruption of infrastructure and Bitcoin's Price Movement, as evidenced by the correlation coefficient of approximately -0.021, thereby demonstrating that typical disruptions of the physical networks do not contribute to resulting in market disruptions.This (network) resiliency shows both the strength of the decentralized nature of Bitcoin and the redundancy within the global Internet.<h2>The Vulnerability Shift: Targeted Attacks Change Everything</h2>While Bitcoin is able to survive seemingly random disruptions effectively, the analysis shows that it would appear to be significantly affected when those disruptions happen to be intentional and carefully planned. Whereas prior to the current simulation, random type failures were used to test the success of the Network, the study simulated intentional attack scenarios against specific High-Value Components of the Network (e.g., high betweeness submarine cables [key global chokepoints], major internet routing hubs, or dominant hosting providers). In contrast to the random testing, the results of the intentional testing portrayed an entirely different outcome.When only looking to target the most important submarine cables like transatlantic routes (e.g., the internet runs over these cables), then your failure threshold for those becomes much lower (to around 20%). A relatively small number of targeted disruptions to important connection points can create a disproportionate impact on global communications. The concentration of risk associated with host infrastructure is another troubling concern. Five of the biggest providers were able to produce as much network damage from disruption as large-scale cable failures: <ol><li data-list="bullet">Hetzner</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">OVHcloud</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">Comcast</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">Amazon Web Services (AWS)</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">Google Cloud</li></ol> All five are also responsible for hosting many of the Bitcoin nodes and related infrastructure. By taking any of the five providers off line—partially or fully—you would impact connectivity approximately 5% of total routing capacity. Here's something to think about: even with the diffuse nature of bitcoin geographically, bitcoin itself is still functionally centralized, due to the fact that key infrastructural providers have high levels of trust among their customers. Due to this centralization and the asymmetric vulnerabilities created on infrastructure providers, they are highly susceptible to exploitation from an advanced adversary and via geo-political conflict.<img src="https://jid.rerrkvifj.com/media/customer/creatorSystem/26a1134e-5d28-40ac-8f6f-1ce599841481.jpeg">A map highlighting the heavy reliance of Bitcoin nodes on centralized cloud giants like AWS, Google Cloud, and OVH, identifying them as critical single points of failure for the network.<h2>TOR’s Surprising Role: From Privacy Tool to Resilience Layer</h2>Although originally thought of as a means to preserve privacy and anonymity, TOR has become an important part of Bitcoin’s physical resilience. Research shows that the number of reachable Bitcoin nodes using TOR has greatly increased, jumping from virtually no nodes using TOR in 2014, to around 63% to 64% of the reachable Bitcoin nodes in 2026. At least part of this growth can be attributed to censorship and government restrictions in countries like Iran, Myanmar and China. In order to study the effects of TOR on resiliency, the researchers created a four-layer multiplex model of: <ol><li data-list="bullet">Submarine Cables</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">Autonomous Systems (ASNs)</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">Bitcoin Nodes</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">TOR Relays</li></ol> The study demonstrated that TOR increases resiliency significantly. TOR has a high degree of concentration of TOR relays in extremely well connected countries in Western Europe (such as Germany, France and the Netherlands), which have solid access to the Internet and redundancy.TOR allows nodes in the bitcoin network to use different routes so that they can avoid the typical congestion found on many standard internet routes. As a result, it makes the entire Network more resilient to interruptions and raises the minimum % of failures needed to disrupt all nodes by 2-10% relative to scenarios that exclusively depend on standard internet routes. Instead of weakening the overall bitcoin network, however, TOR provides an adaptive layer of protection against both censorship and infrastructure outages.<h2>Historical Trends and Network Evolution</h2>The stability of Bitcoin has altered throughout the years, responding to both outside and inside factors to establish an overall level of stability. The study found the following historical trends that have occurred with respect to Bitcoin's level of stability: <ol><li data-list="bullet">2014-2017 - An increase in stability from a low to peak at approximately 0.92 occurred during this period due to large firms decentralising and thus less depending on them; at the same time an early form of decentralisation occurred.</li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">2021 - Stability decreased to approximately 0.72 based on a large concentration (or centralisation) of mining, particularly after the Chinese government's ban on bitcoin mining. </li></ol> <ol><li data-list="bullet">2025 - Stability recovered to approximately 0.88, as nodes were redistributed back across the world and also became more diverse in where they are allowed to operate.</li></ol> Through examples throughout history, it can be seen that Bitcoin is capable of changing with market conditions. As risk of centralization grows, the network will naturally work to remedy itself over time through example by redistributing network infrastructure and adopting newer technologies.Resiliency through the dynamics of Bitcoin’s infrastructure, and therefore its continuous evolution, make it eminently strong.<img src="https://jid.rerrkvifj.com/media/customer/creatorSystem/f328d039-f1ae-4596-955c-7fda961ddf59.jpeg">Bitcoin's Survival Curve: A decade of resilience, showing the 2021 mining ban dip and the subsequent shift toward global decentralization.<h2>Key Takeaways and Future Implications</h2>As demonstrated in the CCAF report, Bitcoin can be classified as extremely resilient when considering its ability to resist random large-scale failures. Decentralisation and worldwide internet infrastructure redundancies make up a resilient network that can withstand outages and other disruptive events typically associated with centralised systems. There are also serious risks related to the concentration of infrastructure as demonstrated in this research study; for example, a limited number of targeted attacks (i.e., on submarine cables or large hosting providers) could have a dramatic impact on connectivity. There are many important conclusions that can be drawn from these observations: 1. The need to diversifyThe long-term success of Bitcoin will depend on the distribution of nodes across multiple geographic areas, different service providers, and many types of infrastructure. 2. Reducing the dependence on large cloud service providers. Encouraging the use of self-hosted nodes and smaller service providers will reduce the risk of Concentration of Control (COC). 3. Developing alternative connectivity solutions.Alternative connectivity solutions (e.g., satellite Internet and mesh networking) can increase redundancy beyond the traditional methods of connecting nodes by means of physical cables. 4. Use of TOR and Privacy Tools as strategic resources.These tools are essential to supporting both censorship - resistant capabilities and physical - resistant capabilities. 5. Geopolitical Risks are now Like Never Before.Geopolitical risks (i.e., attacks at the infrastructure level) are more likely to occur, so identifying potential sources of vulnerability and developing a plan to mitigate those risks is very important.<h2>Conclusion</h2>The bitcoin platform has operated without interruption since it was created. This is due to the strength of its programming, and this success also speaks volumes about the strength of its supporting infrastructure. The CCAF study further validates the bitcoin network's ability to withstand extreme physical disruptions, including the loss of the majority of deep-sea cables under random circumstances. The resilience of the system can be enhanced, but does have limitations. Underlying this resiliency are targeted vulnerabilities associated with routing and hosting infrastructure that are more centralized.If the networks are to remain resilient, they need to continue with decentralization both at the protocol level and the physical/infrastructural level. To mitigate the vulnerabilities buried in these layers, Bitcoin stands to solidify its place among the most resilient systems created in the digital world.

Bitcoin has proven highly resilient to crashes and infrastructure failures, surviving major cable disruptions. However, hidden risks remain in concentrated providers and targeted attacks.
