Terra (LUNA) was a crypto project that aimed to create a blockchain-based payment system using algorithmic stablecoins. The project was launched in 2018 by Terraform Labs, co-founded by Do Kwon and Daniel Shin. Terra's design centered around a two-token system: Terra stablecoins (like TerraUSD or UST, pegged to the U.S. dollar) and LUNA. LUNA served several key functions within the Terra ecosystem. It was the native cryptocurrency used for transaction fees, a governance token allowing holders to vote on proposals, and a mechanism to absorb price volatility from the Terra stablecoins. The stablecoins, such as UST, were not backed by traditional assets like U.S. dollars. Instead, they were designed to maintain their peg through a "burn and mint equilibrium" model, where LUNA was used to stabilize the value of the Terra stablecoins. The Terra blockchain used a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism. The ecosystem included decentralized applications (dApps) like Anchor Protocol for lending and borrowing, and Mirror Protocol for creating synthetic assets. In May 2022, the Terra ecosystem experienced a significant collapse when TerraUSD (UST) lost its peg to the U.S. dollar. This event led to a substantial devaluation of both UST and LUNA, and the Terra blockchain was temporarily halted. Following this collapse, a new blockchain was launched, referred to as Terra 2.0, with a new LUNA token. The original blockchain and token were renamed Terra Classic (LUNC) and LUNA Classic (LUNC), respectively. Terraform Labs filed for bankruptcy in January 2024.
