When users bridge USDT from any supported Layer 2 network to zkLink Nova, the assets are locked in a contract, and an equivalent amount of the merged USDT is issued. This unified token represents the combined liquidity of all the bridged source tokens. If a user wish to move their assets back to a specific source chain, the merged tokens are burned, and the original assets are unlocked. This system is secured by zero-knowledge proofs, specifically zk-SNARKs, which allow the network to inherit the security of the Ethereum mainnet. The governance of these merge contracts is managed by a committee of various industry participants and institutions to ensure decentralized decision-making regarding which assets can be merged. By creating a single version of USDT that can be used across the entire Layer 3 network, the project aims to improve capital efficiency and simplify the decentralized finance experience. It removes the need for users to manually swap between different versions of the same stablecoin and allows decentralized applications to access a larger, deeper pool of liquidity without needing to deploy on every individual Layer 2 chain separately.
