Multichain Bridged WETH (Fantom) is a digital token on the Fantom blockchain that was created to represent Ethereum transferred from the Ethereum network via the Multichain bridge. Multichain, previously known as Anyswap, was a cross-chain protocol that allowed users to move assets between different blockchains. When users bridged Ethereum to Fantom, the protocol would lock the original asset on the source chain and issue this wrapped version for use within the Fantom ecosystem. In mid-2023, the Multichain project suffered a catastrophic failure. This began with technical issues and was followed by unauthorized withdrawals of assets from the bridges management accounts. The situation escalated when it was revealed that the projects leadership had been detained and the team had lost access to the critical infrastructure needed to maintain the bridge. Consequently, the Multichain protocol officially ceased its operations. The security breach directly impacted the reliability of the bridged WETH on Fantom. Because the assets that were supposed to back the token were removed from the bridges reserves, the Fantom version of WETH lost its backing. This rendered the token unredeemable through the original bridge, meaning it could no longer be exchanged back for native Ethereum. Following the collapse, the Fantom Foundation initiated legal proceedings against the Multichain Foundation to address the impact on the network. A court eventually ruled in favor of the Fantom Foundation, which has been working toward the appointment of liquidators to help recover and distribute any remaining funds to those affected. Today, the Fantom network has transitioned toward using alternative bridging solutions and native assets.
