Moonwell is a decentralized, non-custodial lending and borrowing protocol that operates across several blockchain networks, including Base, Moonbeam, Moonriver, and Optimism. The project aims to provide an accessible and user-friendly platform for decentralized finance, often referred to as DeFi. It was originally inspired by the lending functionality of the Compound protocol and was built to serve ecosystems within the Polkadot and Kusama networks before expanding to Ethereum Layer 2 solutions. At its core, the protocol allows users to participate in two primary ways. First, individuals can supply various digital assets to liquidity pools, which makes those assets available for others to borrow. In exchange for providing liquidity, suppliers earn interest. Second, users can borrow assets from these pools by providing other supported cryptocurrencies as collateral. The interest rates for both lending and borrowing are determined algorithmically based on the supply and demand within the market. The WELL token is the native governance and utility token of the Moonwell ecosystem. Its primary function is to empower the community to manage the protocol through a decentralized autonomous organization, or DAO. WELL holders can propose and vote on Moonwell Improvement Proposals, which cover topics such as adding new assets to the platform, adjusting risk parameters, and implementing protocol upgrades. For those who do not wish to vote directly, the system allows for the delegation of voting power to other community members. The token has been upgraded to the xERC20 standard, which facilitates its use across multiple blockchain networks. This multichain functionality ensures that governance and utility are unified regardless of which network a user prefers. Additionally, WELL can be staked in a dedicated Safety Module. This module acts as a protective backstop for the protocol in the event of a shortfall or technical issue. In return for securing the network through staking, participants receive rewards. Moonwell places a strong emphasis on security and transparency. The protocol’s smart contracts undergo regular audits by reputable security firms like Halborn and Code4rena. To further mitigate risks, the project utilizes economic simulations and maintains a bug bounty program. The ecosystem is divided into specific deployments tailored to different networks. Moonwell Apollo serves as the deployment on Moonriver, which acts as a canary network for testing and innovation. Moonwell Artemis is the deployment on Moonbeam, focusing on a more polished and stable environment. Recent expansions onto networks like Base and Optimism have further broadened the project’s reach. By focusing on an intuitive user interface, Moonwell seeks to bridge the gap between complex financial tools and everyday users.
