Metis is a decentralized Layer 2 scaling solution for the Ethereum network designed to address common blockchain challenges such as high transaction costs and slow processing speeds. By using a technology known as Optimistic Rollups, Metis bundles multiple transactions together and processes them off-chain before recording them back onto the Ethereum mainnet. This approach allows the network to maintain the security of Ethereum while providing a much faster and more efficient environment for users and developers. A primary goal of the Metis project is to build an inclusive infrastructure for the Web3 economy. It introduces a unique organizational model called Decentralized Autonomous Companies, or DACs. While traditional Decentralized Autonomous Organizations focus mainly on governance and voting, DACs are designed to function as fully operational businesses on the blockchain. The DAC framework provides built-in tools for essential business tasks such as payroll, marketing, and reputation management. This allows both Web2 and Web3 enterprises to migrate their operations to a decentralized environment more easily. The technical architecture of Metis includes the Metis Virtual Machine, which is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, making it simple for developers to port existing Ethereum applications to the platform. The network operates a dual-chain structure consisting of Andromeda, a general-purpose chain for decentralized finance and NFTs, and Hyperion, an execution layer optimized for artificial intelligence and real-time applications. To further support decentralization, Metis utilizes a decentralized sequencer pool, which prevents a single point of failure in the transaction ordering process. In addition to its scaling capabilities, Metis offers several ecosystem tools. Polis is a middleware platform that simplifies the management of smart contracts for developers. The project also features a native bridge for non-fungible tokens and integrates with the InterPlanetary File System for decentralized data storage. Recent developments have also focused on integrating artificial intelligence through frameworks that allow for the creation of tokenized AI agents and decentralized data ownership. The native token of the project, METIS, serves several critical functions within the ecosystem. It is used to pay for transaction fees on the network and is required for staking by network participants, such as Rangers, who help secure and validate the blockchain. Token holders can also participate in the governance of the protocol by voting on community proposals. Furthermore, the token is used to activate and manage DACs, as well as to facilitate payments for services within those decentralized companies. Through these features, Metis aims to create a scalable, user-centric platform that supports the growth of decentralized applications and the broader Web3 landscape.
