Frax Finance is a decentralized finance protocol that focuses on issuing decentralized stablecoins and building supporting sub-protocols. Originally launched in 2020 as the world first fractional-algorithmic stablecoin system, the project has evolved into a comprehensive DeFi ecosystem with its own Layer 2 blockchain called Fraxtal. The token referred to as Frax (formerly FXS) represents the core utility and governance asset of the system. In a significant strategic shift to unify the ecosystem identity, the project transitioned the original Frax Share (FXS) token into the base monetary unit of the Fraxtal network. In this capacity, the token serves as the primary commodity asset for the blockchain, where it is used to pay for transaction fees (gas) and secure the network through staking. The ecosystem includes several integrated sub-protocols designed to enhance the utility of its tokens. These include Fraxlend, a permissionless lending facility; Fraxswap, a decentralized exchange with native time-weighted average market maker capabilities; and Frax Ferry, an optimistic transfer protocol for moving assets across different blockchains. Additionally, the protocol issues other specialized stablecoins, such as one pegged to the Consumer Price Index to track purchasing power, and a liquid staking derivative for Ethereum. Governance in the ecosystem is facilitated through a vote-escrowed system. Users can lock their tokens to receive voting power, which allows them to participate in decision-making processes such as adjusting protocol fees, allocating assets, and determining the direction of future developments. The system is designed to reward long-term participants by granting higher weight to those who commit their assets for longer periods.
