Degen Zoo is a charity-oriented Web3 gaming project built on the blockchain to simulate the real-world impact of financial incentives on animal extinction. The project was originally conceptualized as a challenge by the founder of DAO Maker to demonstrate that a fully functional NFT-based game could be developed and launched within a 30-day timeframe. It serves as both an educational tool and a social experiment, highlighting how human choices and economic motivations can lead to the decline of various species. The ecosystem revolves around a unique game theory model where players interact with digital animal collections. The game cycle typically follows four main stages: obtaining eggs, hatching them, evolving the resulting animals, and eventually sacrificing the animal NFTs. To participate, users interact with the native DZOO token, which functions as the primary utility asset within the platform. The utility of the DZOO token is deeply integrated into every action of the game. Users stake tokens to earn animal eggs. Once an egg is acquired, a specific amount of tokens must be burned to hatch it, revealing a random animal species. These animals possess different characteristics and rarities. Players can further engage by feeding their animals other NFTs to evolve them, which changes their appearance and increases the number of tokens locked within the digital asset. A central mechanic of the game is the concept of extinction. To release the tokens locked inside an animal NFT, the player must kill the animal by burning the NFT. This process mirrors the real-world destruction of nature for financial gain. The game incorporates a maturity system where killing an animal before it reaches its full life expectancy results in a penalty, effectively encouraging a form of digital conservation or strategic timing. Beyond the game itself, Degen Zoo serves as a platform for charitable contributions. A portion of the royalties generated from NFT trades is directed toward global animal charities and non-governmental organizations. The community participates in the decision-making process through a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), where members can vote on which environmental causes or charities to support. Technically, the project emphasizes a trustless and decentralized architecture. The digital assets and their associated data are stored using IPFS to ensure that the game dynamics remain independent of centralized servers. Additionally, Degen Zoo acts as an incubator for other NFT artists, allowing them to launch their own animal-themed collections within the established framework, provided they are approved by the community DAO. This approach helps create a sustainable ecosystem of new content while continuing to support its core mission of animal welfare awareness.
