Aragon is a decentralized platform designed to facilitate the creation and management of Decentralized Autonomous Organizations, commonly known as DAOs. Launched in 2016 by Luis Cuende and Jorge Izquierdo, the project aimed to provide a digital framework for borderless, transparent organizations that operate without traditional intermediaries. It is built on the Ethereum blockchain and has historically served as a foundational infrastructure for Web3 governance. The Aragon ecosystem consists of several core components. The Aragon Client and the more recent Aragon App provide user friendly interfaces for deploying and managing organizations without requiring deep technical knowledge. Behind these interfaces is Aragon OSx, a lean and modular smart contract framework that allows developers to customize governance rules, finance management, and voting systems. Other tools have included Aragon Voice for gasless voting and Aragon Court, a dispute resolution protocol designed to handle subjective disagreements through a decentralized jury system. The native token associated with the project is known as ANT. Originally, ANT was intended to provide governance rights, allowing holders to vote on proposals and participate in the direction of the Aragon Network. It also played a role in the dispute resolution system, where it could be used to acquire tokens specific to the court system. In late 2023, the project underwent a significant structural shift. The Aragon Association, the non-profit entity that previously stewarded the project, announced its decision to dissolve. This move was prompted by various challenges, including bureaucratic complexity and difficulties in aligning stakeholder interests. As part of this transition, the association initiated a process to return its treasury assets to token holders. ANT holders were given a specific window to redeem their tokens for ether, after which the redeemed tokens were planned to be burned. Following the dissolution of the association, the project is transitioning into a new phase focused on product development. A new foundation and a product council have been established to carry forward the mission of building resilient DAO frameworks. While the original governance model involving the ANT token is being phased out, the underlying technology and software continue to support thousands of organizations in the decentralized ecosystem. The project remains a significant contributor to the development of on-chain governance tools, aiming to make collective decision making more efficient and accessible for global communities.
