Launched in August 2020 by an anonymous creator known as Ryoshi, SHIB is an Ethereum-based (ERC-20) token. It originally gained fame as the "Dogecoin Killer" but has since transitioned into a decentralized ecosystem with a strong community focus.

Much like Bitcoin's Satoshi Nakamoto, Ryoshi’s true identity remains unknown. In 2022, Ryoshi deleted all social media posts and stepped away from the project, leaving it in the hands of the community and lead developers like Shytoshi Kusama, who later transitioned into a "Global Ambassador" role.

The community and developers actively utilize various mechanisms to reduce the circulating supply of tokens. A notable mechanism is ShibTorch, an automated burn dashboard integrated into the Shibarium network, which systematically destroys a portion of every transaction fee.

The Shiba Inu ecosystem utilizes several tokens, each with distinct functions. SHIB serves as the primary currency for community interactions and payments. BONE acts as the gas token for the Shibarium Layer 2 network and enables governance voting on proposals. LEASH is an exclusive token, originally a rebase token, now offering "elite" benefits and early access to ecosystem features. TREAT, the newest addition, is designed for rewards within the Metaverse, supports governance, and will power upcoming "Shibarium Layer 3" privacy features.

Shibarium is a Layer 2 (L2) blockchain built on top of Ethereum. Its primary purpose is to address Ethereum's challenges, such as high transaction fees and slow processing speeds. Shibarium enables developers to build decentralized applications (dApps), games, and NFTs specifically tailored for the Shiba Inu community, enhancing scalability and efficiency.
