Staked Aurora, known by its token symbol stAUR, is the first native Liquid Staking token specifically designed for the Aurora Protocol. Its primary purpose is to provide Aurora token holders with a more flexible and convenient method to stake their assets and earn rewards. This mechanism aims to improve liquidity and capital efficiency within the Aurora ecosystem. The stAUR token allows users to earn staking rewards for the Aurora Protocol and is a self-accruing asset. Beyond earning rewards, stAUR has several functionalities within the Web3 space. It enables fast unstaking, allowing token holders to access their staked assets and accumulated rewards immediately, though this process incurs a two percent fee. Furthermore, stAUR can be utilized as collateral for loans and for participation in various decentralized finance, or DeFi, applications operating on the Aurora blockchain. The token is also designed to be tradable on decentralized exchanges, facilitating its exchange for other cryptocurrencies or assets. The underlying Aurora Protocol is a platform built for Web3 developers to create scalable distributed applications. It incorporates a high-performance Ethereum Virtual Machine, known as the Aurora Engine, and a trustless bridge called the Rainbow Bridge. This architecture combines the developer-friendly environment of Ethereum with the modern blockchain performance of the NEAR Protocol, aiming for scalable, carbon-neutral, and low-cost Web3 services. Staked Aurora (stAUR) was launched on the mainnet by Meta Pool, a liquid staking service, on May 5, 2023. Meta Pool is recognized as the first Liquid Staking solution for both the NEAR Protocol and the Aurora blockchain, which is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine. The development of stAUR emerged after Meta Pool secured first prize in an Aurora hackathon track developer competition at ETHDenver. The stAUR token itself represents a portion of the total AURORA tokens that are staked in the Aurora Plus staking service. Its operation involves smart contracts, referred to as Depositors, which manage the deposit of delegated AURORA tokens into the staking service. Users can acquire stAUR by staking their AURORA tokens through the Meta Pool platform. When AURORA is staked, an equivalent amount of stAUR is issued to the user, representing their staked position and accrued rewards. This process is how new stAUR tokens are minted and distributed to participants.
Holding stAUR offers several key benefits. Users earn staking rewards automatically, reflected in the token's value appreciation, while maintaining liquidity. This liquidity allows stAUR to be utilized across various decentralized finance (DeFi) applications for additional yield or utility. Furthermore, a "fast unstake" option is available for quick conversion back to AURORA, providing flexibility and convenience.
The Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for stAUR is calculated based on the average rewards generated by the deposited AURORA tokens managed by the stAUR contract. These rewards originate from the Aurora+ Staking service. Essentially, the cumulative rewards earned by the underlying staked AURORA are distributed proportionally among stAUR holders, contributing to the overall APY displayed.
Yes, security is a priority for Meta Pool, the platform facilitating stAUR. The underlying smart contracts for stAUR have undergone thorough audits by reputable security firms, including Blocksec and Halborn. These audits are critical for identifying and mitigating potential vulnerabilities, ensuring the integrity and safety of users' staked assets within the stAUR system.
Users have two primary methods to withdraw or unstake their stAUR. The "fast unstake" option provides immediate withdrawal back to AURORA but incurs a 2% fee. Alternatively, the "delayed unstake" option allows users to unstake without any fees, but it requires an unbonding period of up to four days, during which no staking rewards are earned. Staked AURORA tokens are managed by the stAUR contract through a non-custodial service.
