Steem is the foundational blockchain and database that underlies the project. Steemit is the primary social media application that operates directly on the Steem blockchain. The core purpose of Steem is to distribute cryptocurrency rewards to users who create and curate content that the community finds valuable and engaging.

STEEM is the primary liquid cryptocurrency, freely tradable on exchanges. Steem Power (SP) represents STEEM that has been "powered up" or staked, granting users increased voting influence on content and providing resource credits for network interactions like posting or commenting. Steem Dollars (SBD) were designed as a stable token, originally aiming for a value of $1.00 USD, though its market price can fluctuate based on supply and demand.

Rewards are generated from the blockchain's internal reward pool and are primarily distributed based on community engagement and upvotes. For each piece of content, 75% of the allocated rewards go to the author who created the post. The remaining 25% is distributed among the curators, which are the users who upvoted the content, thereby recognizing its value and contributing to its visibility.

In Steem's Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) consensus mechanism, "Witnesses" are critical. These 21 individuals or entities are elected by the community's votes, distinguishing them from traditional miners. Their primary role is to produce and validate new blocks on the blockchain, ensuring network security, transaction processing, and performing key governance functions that are central to the network's ongoing operation and development.

Steem and Hive originated from a significant community split in 2020. Following an event widely perceived as a "hostile takeover" of Steem by the Tron Foundation, a large segment of the original community, including core developers and many applications, decided to fork the Steem blockchain to create Hive. Consequently, Hive represents the continuation of the original community's vision and development efforts, while Steem operates under the influence of the Tron ecosystem.

Currently, there are no official or legitimate STEEM airdrops being conducted. Users should be highly vigilant, as there have been frequent reports of phishing scams, particularly in late 2025 and 2026, falsely promising airdrops via external platforms. Genuine Steem rewards are earned directly from the internal blockchain reward pool through content creation and curation. Exercise extreme caution and avoid connecting your crypto wallet to any external websites claiming to offer free STEEM.
