League of Ancients, often referred to by its token ticker LOA, is a blockchain-based gaming project developed as a multiplayer online battle arena, or MOBA. Drawing heavy inspiration from established titles like League of Legends and Dota 2, it was designed to be the first 5v5 MOBA game built on the Binance Smart Chain. The project aims to combine traditional competitive gaming with decentralized finance and non-fungible tokens, creating what the developers call a MOBA-verse. The gameplay centers on strategic team combat where two sides, known as the Luminous and the Dark Souls, compete to destroy the opposing team’s base. Players choose from a variety of hero roles, including Tank, Mage, Marksman, Support, and Assassin. Each hero features a unique set of active and passive abilities. The game offers different modes such as Normal Matches for casual play, NFT Matches for competitive ranked seasons, and organized Tournaments. A core feature of the ecosystem is its use of NFTs. Hero skins are categorized by rarity and are owned by the players as digital assets on the blockchain. These skins are more than cosmetic; they are designed to influence a player's earning potential within the project's play-to-earn model. The project was built as a free-to-play platform, allowing users to start with a set of basic heroes without any upfront cost. The LOA token serves as the primary utility and governance asset for the ecosystem. Within the game environment, it is used for purchasing items, participating in special events, and entering high-stakes tournaments. Outside of direct gameplay, the token is used for staking in a system called the Ancient Realms and for participating in yield farming through the project's marketplace. The project was founded in 2021 by a team based in Malaysia, led by project governor Dwayne Ong. Development was supported by a partnership with Anantarupa Studios, a veteran game development house in Southeast Asia. While the project gained significant attention during its launch for its goal of bringing professional-level esports earnings to a wider audience, some industry databases and platforms have marked the project as inactive or out of business in more recent years.
