Arkeo is a decentralized network and open marketplace designed to provide reliable and censorship-resistant access to blockchain data. Often described as a decentralized backend for Web3 applications, it serves as a decentralized alternative to traditional, centralized infrastructure providers. The project was originally incubated by the ShapeShift DAO and is built using the Cosmos SDK, which allows it to maintain a modular and interoperable architecture. The core purpose of Arkeo is to turn raw blockchain RPC (Remote Procedure Call) bandwidth into a tradeable commodity. It connects node operators, known as data providers, with consumers such as decentralized application developers, wallets, and exchanges. These providers run full nodes for various blockchains including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Cosmos. By allowing anyone to become a provider and set their own pricing, Arkeo fosters a free-market environment that prevents any single entity from controlling access to essential blockchain information. Technical features of the network include a specialized indexing layer called Un-chained, which is an open-source library that helps organize and retrieve node data efficiently. All interactions within the marketplace are cryptographically provable and settled on-chain to ensure transparency. To maintain high service quality, the network employs a trustless reputation system and a bonding mechanism. Providers are required to bond tokens as collateral; if their service fails to meet performance thresholds, such as uptime or response accuracy, a portion of their bond can be slashed and redistributed. The ARKEO token is the native utility and governance asset of the ecosystem. It is primarily used as the medium of exchange for purchasing data services, either through subscription bundles or pay-per-call models. Beyond payments, the token is essential for network security, as validators stake it to reach consensus. It also grants holders the right to participate in governance, allowing them to vote on protocol parameters, fee structures, and treasury management. By decentralizing the infrastructure layer, Arkeo aims to remove common points of failure and censorship risks associated with the current Web3 stack. The project emphasizes community ownership and was launched with a distribution strategy that included various ecosystem stakeholders. Through this model, Arkeo seeks to support the development of truly decentralized applications that are self-reliant and resistant to external interference.
