The Internet Computer (ICP) refers to itself as a 'World Computer' because it's engineered to host entire web applications—including front-end interfaces, back-end logic, and data—directly on its blockchain. This architecture eliminates the need for centralized traditional IT and cloud providers, aiming to create a fully decentralized internet where all services operate transparently and securely on a public ledger. It provides a comprehensive, unified platform for building and running a new generation of web services.
The ICP token serves three main functions. First, for governance, holders can stake ICP to participate in the Network Nervous System (NNS) and vote on network proposals. Second, for gas (Cycles), ICP tokens are burned to create 'Cycles,' which are used to power computation and storage for applications on the network. Third, ICP tokens are distributed as rewards to node providers who maintain the infrastructure and to participants actively involved in governance, incentivizing secure and robust network operation.
The 'Reverse Gas Model' is a unique feature where developers, rather than users, pay for the computation and storage consumed by their decentralized applications (canisters). Developers load their applications with 'Cycles,' which are derived from burning ICP tokens. This model allows end-users to interact with and browse decentralized applications on the network without incurring any transaction fees. This approach fosters a user experience similar to traditional web services, promoting broader adoption and smoother engagement with Web3 applications.
Internet Identity (II) is the Internet Computer's secure and anonymous authentication system, designed to simplify user logins for decentralized applications. It leverages hardware-based security features, such as those found on smartphones (e.g., FaceID, fingerprint readers) or dedicated security keys, to create a credential without requiring traditional cryptocurrency wallets or seed phrases. This allows users to access various applications across the network with a single, secure identity, significantly enhancing privacy and ease of use by streamlining the login process.
Yes, the Internet Computer aims to enable actual AI computation directly on-chain. Unlike many other blockchain networks that typically store AI-related data or manage limited aspects of a model, ICP's 'canisters' (its smart contracts) are built with sufficient processing power and memory to execute inference for Large Language Models (LLMs) and other AI algorithms directly within the decentralized environment. This allows AI models to operate with the transparency, immutability, and decentralization inherent to a blockchain, ensuring verifiable and tamper-proof AI outputs.
