While it maintains deep integrations with the Crypto.com application and exchange, the Cronos blockchain itself functions as a distinct network, emphasizing Web3, DeFi, and GameFi initiatives.
The total supply of CRO is fixed at 30 billion tokens. Initially, the supply was 100 billion, but Crypto.com executed a significant burn of 70 billion tokens in 2021. Cronos consists of three interconnected chains:
Cronos POS (Layer 0): This is the foundational chain for staking CRO, securing the network with minimal fees.
Cronos EVM (Layer 1): Built on Cosmos SDK, it's Ethereum-compatible, supporting most DeFi and NFT applications.
Cronos zkEVM (Layer 2): A newer chain launched in 2024/2025, leveraging ZK-sync technology on Ethereum, focused on scalability and institutional liquidity solutions.
CRO serves several key functions:
Gas Fees: Pays for transaction costs across all Cronos chains.
Staking: Users stake CRO to help secure the network and earn annual rewards, typically around 10–12%.
Associated Perks: Staking CRO can unlock platform-specific tiered card benefits, such as cashback rewards and various rebates, alongside trading fee discounts on certain platforms.
Governance: CRO holders can actively participate in voting on protocol upgrades and the future direction of the network.
